HOOSING an endodontic system from the many types being promoted out there can be confusing and expensive. Rotary NiTi has been the most popular system used and is heavily marketed in dental schools around the country. Every dentist graduating from school has had at least some knowledge or experience with Pro Tapers, Pro GT, or Profiles. The problem with rotary NiTi is the instruments’ susceptibility to separation in curved canals due to high torsional stress on the file at the curve. The cost of these files can add up when you start throwing them away after a couple of uses to prevent separation. Rotary NiTi has its limits in cases where the apical end of the root is bent at 90 degrees or more. The flexibility of the file will not allow you to pre-bend the file to get it into the curve. Because of its shortcomings and because the costs of the unit and files are so high, many general practitioners are always looking for an alternative system. The problem with deciding on an alternative is the cost. Every system out there will set you back at least a grand or two and you are not sure if you are going to be comfortable with it or not. Well, here is a system for you that is both cheap and easy to learn.
The SafeSiders® system is an economical system that is made to do root canal by hand or on a reciprocating handpiece. This is the only system out there that allows you to buy the reamers and NiTi files alone and try the system out without spending a load of cash. In order to use the rotary NiTi system, you would have to open a canal to a 25 before using the first NiTi file. In the SafeSiders system, once you get to the size 25, you are halfway done. This system allows you to try it without having to commit to buying the handpiece or motor unit as other systems do. This is the least expensive way to try out a new system. I do most of my cases by hand. If you also work by hand, it is possible to buy only the reamers and try the system for less than $150.00.
The result of root canal therapy using the SafeSiders is just as good as any system out there. You will not be able to tell the difference in results between this system and that of rotary NiTi. The technique is simple, and it can be used in any type of canal: straight, curved, or bent at 90 degrees. The chance of reamer separation is much less than it is with rotary NiTi. The reason for this reduced incidence of separation is that most of the reamers in this system are stainless steel. By the time you get to the two NiTi instruments, the canal has already been opened wide to a .06-.08 taper by the Gates and Peeso instruments. The two NiTi instruments only work at the apical third, beyond most curvature, so the chance of their separating is very small. The NiTi instruments in the rotary system separate more because a lot of torsional stress is exerted on them as they take the curve.
Figures 1 through 10 show examples of cases done with the SafeSiders system. The result is just as good as rotary NiTi or any other system out there that will set you back a couple of thousand dollars.
